A Changing of the Guard

We have new Officers

Posted on July 5, 2022

Summer in El Dorado means some super-hot days, dearth for the bees, and sometimes, supersedures of our Club’s rulers.

Somehow it ended up me, Cindy Holmes, as your new President, with Sivia Van Gundy as Vice President. Jim Guilliams moves to Treasurer, and Debbie Katz will be Secretary. Our At Large board members will be Terry Valdez and Sandy Myron, joined by Juli Shattuck. There can be other board members appointed, if any of the membership would like to be a part of making decisions about how to steer this club. Send an email to [email protected] if you would like a say. Your officers and board members will continue our efforts to make this the best bee club we can, with classes, annual bee sales, events, parties, demos at our club apiary, and outreach activities in our community. We support our beginners and experienced beekeepers alike with discussions in our Facebook group.

July Club Meeting: Summer Management- Hot Stuff!

Sunday, July 10th   4 – 6 pm
Cameron Park Community Center, Social Room

Our next club meeting is Sunday, July 10 at the Cameron Park Community Center, from 4 to 6pm. We’ll be discussing what dearth is, and how to handle the challenges to the bees that come from the hot weather, including lack of food, robbing behavior, and what mite treatments we can use in these conditions.
Join us for this group discussion. Our club store will be open for T shirts, hats, pollen patties, and more!

club apiary beginners with beesClub apiary now open

Hey everyone, come on out for our open apiary days! The Club apiary is now open the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month, from noon until 1:30, located at the Sherwood Demonstration Garden. The hives are across from the garden. Club Beekeeper Jim Guilliams will be available to open hives, answer questions and demonstrate techniques. If you're not working with a mentor, this is a great opportunity to get your questions answered!

Our most popular event is coming next month – our annual summer party. This year we will be back at the Bluestone Meadow Lavender Farm with the rock-n-roll band The  Double Shots, a catered BBQ Tri-tip meal, and some extras we’re still working on. This is a members-only event, and we will be inviting members of our sister club, Big Valley Beekeepers Guild to join us. We're planning a Beekeeping Knowledge Smackdown, with teams from the two clubs, with a prize (so start studying now!) We may have some honey-related libations available...hmmm.... Look for the postcard invitation later this month, and signups will be on the website. We hope to see everyone there!

Questions about what's going on with your bees? Try our Facebook group

If you can't figure out what the heck's going on in that hive, check out our Facebook group, where club members often post questions, answers, and many opinions. The answer is usually "no, that's a drone". You can also post photos of your beekeeping successes!

Hungry Bees?

It's a good idea to have pollen patties on hand, so you have them when necessary. The club has pollen patties for sale, $3 each. Placerville area, contact John Havicon at 916.996.8371, or for the Cameron Park area, contact Bernie Ruiz at 916.719.6708. They are also available at our club meetings.

Join us at our next meeting, Sunday, July 10th at the Cameron Park Community Center. See you there!
