Bears! Bears! Bears!

Posted on May 2, 2022

bear attackHere in El Dorado County bears are a given. It's only a matter of time before they come snooping around your apiary.

Don't let your bees and your investment be destroyed! This month's meeting features our own John Havicon who will present on bear behavior and electric bear fences.

bearJohn Havicon has owned and managed a farm in Apple Hill since 2010. He keeps bees on his farm for pollination and has been a beekeeper for eight years. John retired as Park Ranger, working along the American River. He has dealt with many interactions between people and wildlife and has worked closely with California Fish & Wildlife to help resolve issues, such as animal rescues, trapping, tracking and enforcement of fish & wildlife laws. John attended the wildlife management program at Humboldt State University and graduated with a degree in Earth Science from California State University, Northridge.

For our May 8th meeting we're back at the Cameron Park Community Center, Social Room.

honey extractorClub members are invited to visit Steve and Monika Baker for a hands-on honey extraction demonstration on Saturday, May 14. We'll begin with raw frames of honey (already removed from the hives), an inspection to determine the content and quality of the individual frames, how to remove and save the wax cappings and wax honeycomb, instructions on how to process the wax, spin the honey, the filter process and bottling. You’ll also have an opportunity to try your hand at removing the cappings yourself (gloves provided) and YES, you get to sample the honey!

While the honey is extracting, you are welcome and encouraged to walk through their gardens and view many plants that Monika specifically planted for their bees.

We only have room for 40 members.

club apiary beginners with beesClub Apiary now open

Our classes will soon be over for the year, but the learning opportunities do not end there. Our Club apiary will now be open the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, from noon until 1:30, located at the Sherwood Demonstration Garden. Club Beekeeper Jim Guilliams will be available to open hives, answer questions and demonstrate techniques.

Our hive’s about to swarm

It’s the time of year when our club president, along with a few board members, begin preparations for swarming — or shall I say, retiring from the board. We leave behind an active, vibrant club with everything in place for the next board!

I’d like to encourage everyone to get involved with our club by either participating as a board member or volunteering on a committee! It’s a great way to get to know fellow club members, along with having a good time. If you’re interested in participating on a committee, here’s a list to choose from. Please contact me if you’re interested, at [email protected]. Club elections for board members will be next month.

sold outClub bee sales over for 2022

We're sold out for the year, but if you're still interested in getting bees, check out our Facebook group, where club members often post bees, queens and equipment for sale.

Hungry Bees?

It's a good idea to have pollen patties on hand, so you have them when necessary. The club has pollen patties for sale, $3 each. Placerville area, contact John Havicon at 916.996.8371, or for the Cameron Park area, contact Bernie Ruiz at 916.719.6708.

Join us at our next meeting, Sunday, May 8th at the Cameron Park Community Center. See you there!
