We are excited to announce some great speakers lined up for our upcoming Zoom meetings. We start out in August with Billy Synk from Project Apis m, followed in September with Ray and Tammy Olivarez from Olivarez Honey Bees and for October, we are super excited to have Dr. Sammy Ramsey! If you haven't yet participated in a Zoom meeting, here's a tutorial to help you get started.

Club meeting August 9

This month we welcome Billy Synk from Project Apis m. Billy will be speaking on Cover Crops: The Link Between Better Pollination, Healthier Bees and Soil.

Billy Synk is Director of Pollination Programs for Project Apis m. and manages the ‘Seeds for Bees’ program which has installed about 40,000 acres of bee forage cover crops in orchards throughout California. He was trained in beekeeping by noted bee breeder-geneticist Sue Cobey at Ohio State University, where he received a BS in environmental policy and management. Billy moved to California in 2009 to work in the hybrid seed industry. After gaining experience with production agriculture he joined UC Davis, where he managed bees and participated in bee research projects with Drs. Brian Johnson, Neal Williams and Elina Niño.

Beekeeping questions?

We are in the process of adding a mentoring section to our website for next year. In the mean time, Bernie Ruiz is available for mentoring in the Folsom, El Dorado Hills, Rescue and Cameron Park areas. He can be reached by text at 916.719.6708. Folks with beekeeping questions can also post to our Facebook group.

North American Mite-A-Thon: August 15th-30th

Here's an opportunity to be a citizen scientist. The North American Mite-A-Thon is a tri-national effort to collect mite infestation data within a two week window to visualize Varroa infestations in honey bee colonies across North America. All beekeepers can participate, creating a rich distribution of sampling sites in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. To participate, upload your data here.

Varroa

You can still save a hive with high mite levels if you act soon. For help in deciding what to treat with, check out the Honey Bee Health Coalition’s Varroa Management Decision Tool.

Hungry Bees?

The club has pollen patties for sale, $3 each. For those in the Placerville area, contact John Havicon at 916.996.8371, or for the Cameron Park area, contact Bernie Ruiz at 916.719.6708.

We miss seeing everyone and sharing what's going on in our hives.
Until we meet again, bee well!
