Learn about this alternative way to keep bees. What are the advantages? What are the challenges? Stephen Repasky is an EAS (Eastern Apicultural Society) Master Beekeeper, and owner of Meadow Sweet Apiaries in Pittsburgh, PA. He has been an officer, director, or member of a long list of beekeeping organizations. He manages approximately 200 colonies (mostly as single brood chambers) in western Pennsylvania. Stephen has been a speaker for us before, on swarm management

We had a great party! Thanks everyone!

party 2Our annual summer party was a lot of fun. More than a hundred members turned out for a catered BBQ Tri-tip meal with special desserts, adult beverages including mead, the Double Shots rock-n-roll band , a Beekeeping Knowledge Smackdown (we won!), raffle and auction. All of this at the beautiful Bluestone Meadow Lavender Farm. Representatives from the Big Valley Beekeepers Guild joined us. Let's do it again next year!

club apiary beginners with beesClub apiary now open

Hey everyone, come on out for our open apiary days! The Club apiary is now open the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month, from noon until 1:30, located at the Sherwood Demonstration Garden.  This Saturday (Sept 3) is cancelled: it's too hot outside! The hives are across from the garden. Club Beekeeper Jim Guilliams will be available to open hives, answer questions and demonstrate techniques. If you're not working with a mentor, this is a great opportunity to get your questions answered! Check the FaceBook Group page (honey bears) to see if we have a hot weather time change.

Questions about what's going on with your bees? Try our Facebook group

If you can't figure out what the heck's going on in that hive, check out our Facebook group, where club members often post questions, answers, and many opinions. The answer is usually "no, that's a drone". You can also post photos of your beekeeping successes!

Hungry Bees?

It's a good idea to have pollen patties on hand, so you have them when necessary. The club has pollen patties for sale, $3 each. Placerville area, contact John Havicon at 916.996.8371, or for the Cameron Park area, contact Bernie Ruzicka at 916.719.6708. They are also available at our club meetings.

Our next meeting is Sunday, September 11, 4-6 at the Cameron Park Community Center- Steve Repasky on single deep colonies. Join us!
