WE LOOK AT ALTERNATIVES

Overwintering in Single Deeps

September Club Meeting: Stephen Repasky will speak via Zoom on Overwintering in Single Deeps.

Our speaker this month is Stephen Repasky. Steve has been our kick-off speaker in January, covering swarms and swarm control. This time he is back to discuss maintaining a colony in a single deep box, instead of the traditional double deep Langstroth.

Due to the fire, we have a small change in the location of our meeting this Sunday.  We will be meeting in the Dance Room of the Cameron Park Community Center, instead of our normal spot, the Social Room. As you probably have heard, the CPCC is currently an Evacuation Center for the fire. Come a little earlier than usual because we may have to park a bit further away. Look for our yellow signs.

We hate mosquitos, and we hate fires!
Pyrocumulus cloud - Mosquito Fire

Here we go again with another fire season. Our fingers are crossed for all of our members who may be in the path of this year’s biggie: the Mosquito Fire. Last year, during the Caldor Fire, we had 5 of our board members evacuated. We were also on Covid restrictions, so we did our best to stick together with Zoom meetings from wherever we were. Even if we’re not in the direct path, our bees suffer as we do with all the smoke. Last year we saw a lot of queens shut down laying eggs for a time, and there was probably a negative effect overall on the general health of our colonies.

club apiary beginners with beesClub apiary now open

Hey everyone, come on out for our open apiary days! The Club apiary is now open the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month, from noon until 1:30, located at the Sherwood Demonstration Garden.  If it's too hot we meet earlier. Check here or on our FaceBook group page (with the honey bears). The hives are across from the garden. Club Beekeeper Jim Guilliams will be available to open hives, answer questions and demonstrate techniques. If you're not working with a mentor, this is a great opportunity to get your questions answered!

Here's a hint! Amina Harris is coming in October!

Amina Harris, Director of the Honey and Pollination Center at UC Davis, is coming to our October meeting to conduct a guided honey tasting. Don't miss it!

Questions about what's going on with your bees? Try our Facebook group

If you can't figure out what the heck's going on in that hive, check out our Facebook group, where club members often post questions, answers, and many opinions. The answer is usually "no, that's a drone". You can also post photos of your beekeeping successes!

Hungry Bees?

It's a good idea to have pollen patties on hand, so you have them when necessary. The club has pollen patties for sale, $3 each. Placerville area, contact John Havicon at 916.996.8371, or for the Cameron Park area, contact Bernie Ruzicka at 916.719.6708. They are also available at our club meetings.

Our next meeting is Sunday, September 11, 4-6 at the Cameron Park Community Center- Steve Repasky on single deep colonies. Join us!
